Wuthering Heights
“A fiend of a book – an incredible monster [...] The action is laid in hell, – only it seems places and people have English names there.”
-Dante Gabriel Rossetti
Heathcliff and Catherine are trapped in the continuum of William Blake’s “The Four Zoas”. Cursed to eternally fall, they burn in their passion continuously, since they are opposing states of being unable to recover their lost psychic integration.
Elliptical and
inarticulate, they represent
primary aspects of life which are
unaffected by time and space, and
they only follow the path that
their nature dictates. Placed in a
world derived from fleshly bonds,
they are ceaselessly
rising and falling together like
the undying Gods of Blake’s
mythology.
